WISC-IV Intelligence and Cognitive Assessment

The value of WISC-IV lies less in the total score than in the differences between its index scores.

WISC-IV

What it measures

Verbal Comprehension

Vocabulary, verbal reasoning, conceptual relationships, general knowledge.

Perceptual Reasoning

Visual-spatial thinking, pattern recognition, non-verbal problem solving.

Working Memory

Holding information in mind and operating on it. Closely tied to attention and learning.

Processing Speed

Scanning and processing simple visual information quickly and accurately.

When it is used

  • Identifying giftedness and high cognitive potential
  • Assessing specific learning difficulties
  • Understanding the cognitive background of attention problems
  • Investigating underperformance relative to expectation
  • Educational planning and school placement

Interpretation

Scores are expressed on a distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The clinically important information is usually the pattern across indexes. A child with very high verbal comprehension and low processing speed "knows the answer but cannot finish the paper" — what helps is extra time and reduced writing load, not more homework.
